Some of my favorite things

November 2, 2017

As I'm sitting in my comfy chair, cuppa next to me and my computer on my lap, I looked around my living room and thought, I should share some of my favorite things about my home...what makes it my happy place.  Of course, it's always the people I share it with, but I want to show you what graces my shelves, walls and tabletops.

Today's favorite thing is the pheasant (to the left of heading) on a beautifully appointed antique plate is one of my favorites because of the rich, bold colors and, it reminds me of the pheasants that are making a comeback on our farm.

Please share with me some of your favorite things in your home.

I took a little time today...

November 24, 2017

I think this has been the first time in a long time that I've gotten my Christmas tree up and decorated.  I've usually been so busy dressing and decorating shop windows, cabinets, counters and tables, that I've been too tired and uninterested in my own home.  Not this year!

I took such pleasure in having Pandora tuned into my Christmas station, a soda near by and my creativity unleashed.  I did something different with my tree this year and I must say, it turned out smashing.  As I'm neutralizing my homes interior...going for the full on farmhouse look (which is exactly what my home is) I chose a color scheme of champagne, silver, and rose gold, with textures I've gathered from nature...pampas grass fronds, feathers, and glittered sticks.

Normally, I decorate the tree every year in ornaments I've collected over the years.  I've tired of them and that look.  Very happy with my choices.  How about you?  What are your colors, traditions, special affects?

You, Me and a Cuppa Tea...

December 1, 2017

This set is available for purchase in my online store, here on my website.  Just click on the Shop B&R link at the top of the page.  It's just a simple little set and that's what I like about it.

There are several people I'd enjoy sharing a cuppa with...either of my daughters or DIL to be, my momma, sis and several friends are at the top of my list.  I like my tea with honey.  Sometimes milk and sugar.  Sometimes with nothing at all.

And, sometimes with no one at all.

We had the pleasure of traveling Europe this past summer.  We visited several countries.  The Finnish people love their coffee...strong and black.  Irish love their coffee and their tea.  When we got to Wales...well, it's tea all the way and every way and any time of the day, too!

So, tell me, who would you like to share a cuppa with?  Coffee?  Tea?  You and me?

I'll be in my basement...you can find me there!

January 9, 2018

It's started...the big change from my office studio on our main floor to the basement of our 1914 home. I've been wanting to get everything moved to one spot and a place that I can work and walk away, leaving the project in it's current state, all the while maintaining a reasonable amount of organization and put-togetherness in our living areas. Hoping to NOT ever have projects out on my dining table.

I'll be reclaiming the current studio space for additional family time, with a couch, chairs, etc. Or, it might turn into our dining room and I'll put add'l seating in the kitchen area, where the dining room sits now. So many choices...I just have to get the one space emptied and the new space ready to go.

BURLAP & ROSES at Crooked Hedge Farm will open again the first Friday in May, for the weekend.   Guest vendors...a gathering of friends, really, will be joining me the first weekend in June.

Our sleeping porch...would you stay here?

January 25, 2018

Our vintage farm house, ca. 2018, 100 years old this year, comes with a sleeping porch/sunroom off the upper level that runs across the whole width of the structure. Pretty lucky are we and anyone who stays with us.  Everyone gets treated to this room.  It is special.

The photo shows the east end of the room.  The bed is situated, facing the east window on the west end.  Mornings...well, nothing quite like getting awoke by the sun.  And sunsets?  Well, you can enjoy them while enjoying the quiet from the couch.  The views from this room are sweeping, taking in the whole of our 160 acres.

We've kicked around the idea of a B&B and wonder if you'd stay in a place that looked like this?  Of course, you'd want to see more photos and know what all would be included...but for now, does this room and the privacy it offers appeal to you?  Let me know at [email protected]  OR message me through FB.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Unloading from a recent pick...

January 30, 2018

I recently did a LIVE estate sale and I always get first pick of the items.  One of the perks, you might say, of doing this for a living.

For whatever reason, I actually get a big bang out of doing them.  Firstly, I'm helping someone with a daunting task...like family cleaning out mom and dad's things.  It can be very emotional and overwhelming.  I like that I am able to be sensitive and discerning.  I've found my niche.

Secondly, I get a huge bang out of going through other peoples things.  My thoughts always wonder to, "why did they have this?" "What did they use this item for?" "Who gave them this sweet sentiment?" etc.

I get to know about or a little more about a person through doing this.  If I've known them, pieces of a puzzle may come together.  Sometimes, things make perfect sense.  Other times...there's another piece of the puzzle that opens up...realizing you may not have really known the person after all.

For sure, it's always interesting and fun. I like the physicality of it.  I love turning on some music and going at it.  Exhilarating for certain...for me anyway.

Today we're finishing up, loading more things, meeting Helping Hand and the Salvation Army getting the things that didn't sell.  Doing a once over for the homeowner, helping her get the home market ready.  The scrap guy has come and gone.  The garage will get swept out.  All part of the package.

I'm for hire...Tag and Estate Sales are my thing.  I'm going to evaluate another next week.  Make sure you like my B&R page to follow along.

Burlap & Roses at Crooked Hedge Farm

We're opening SOON at Crooked Hedge Farm

March 30, 2018

Well, the time has come to announce our 2018 Schedule here at Crooked Hedge Farm.

When I first set out on the venture of owning my own shop, I started out as an occasional sale venue.  The first one to offer this kind of shopping experience in Iowa, to my knowledge.  Many followed suit.  Having tried a few different options on openings, locations, etc., I'm back to doing what I was most successful at and in the location that I knew I wanted to be at...our farm.  It's been my goal over the years, that as we look to retirement, this is what and where I'd do Burlap & Roses.

So, our OPEN schedule will be once a month, on the FIRST Friday and Saturday, 11:00-6:00 both days.  I'll also OPEN by appointment with adequate notice.

Twice a year, I organize a junkin' tour for parts of Warren, Madison and Clarke Counties.  The first one is scheduled for June 1st and 2nd.  The Backroads & Byways Junkin' Tour will run from Indianola to Osceola and will include wine tasting at our local Two Saints Winery.  A fun stop along the way for some quiet gal-pal time.

Hope to see you soon!  If you've not been to my new local, I think you'll like it a lot!
